The Span Between (2017 - Present)
Land bridges are pivotal intersections between continents and oceans. Incrementally changing over timespans that are measured in eons rather than human lifespans, they emerge to connect continents or submerge to separate them. When connected, their narrowness directs ancient migratory patterns: corridors and stopover points that have been used not only by humans, but also by birds, insects, animals, and plants. When separated, land bridges become barriers that isolate their inhabitants by changing the pace and direction of migratory movements.. Over time, this changing connectivity creates important centers of biodiversity, in which unique combinations of local and global flora and fauna intermingle. Each is a longstanding contact zone for human culture, where financial gain, environmental domination, and asymmetrical power structures have inspired humans to become agents for monumental geological changes to the land.
Along the shores of these shifting landscapes, fragmentary details of the ancient past converge with present-day artifacts and provoke contemplation of the expanse of space between. It is possible to perceive not only the distant shore and the fluid space that exists between the continents, but also the chronological space between the present and the past. The Span Between is an ongoing project that explores these complex and important sites.
